Well this is it.

You may have noticed that the last few weeks I’ve been difficult to get a hold of, distracted, and otherwise distant. This is because I’ve been making a decision, an important one. I’ve decided to spend my life savings and fly to Japan to marry the love of my life.

I met Alice playing World of Warcraft six months ago, I was an Orcish Warrior, she was the Human Paladin Anatolia. We had little in common to begin with and we fought often about the nature of the Horde, whether Paladins were good or evil, and what should be done about fixing the World of Azeroth’s problems before the Burning Legion attacked once again. We began to talk more in more, first through the WoW forums, but eventually via AIM and Skype. The hate gave way to mutual respect, which eventually grew into friendship and then, love. We’ve been talking nearly daily for the last eight weeks or. She is contractually bound to remain in Japan for the next two years while I have no such obligations, so I’ve decided to take the next step and go to her instead of pining away here.

The ring is in my pocket, it is simple but elegant. It cost me most of what I own. I had to hock my anime and my 360 to cover it. I plan on proposing the moment I step of the airplane and meet her.

I know this is sudden, but I need to leave fast, before I lose my nerve. I want to apologize to all my friends for whom this will come as a surprise.

schalakiddzeal et all
I’m afraid that there’s not going to be anymore Anime nights, try to carry on in my name.

fantasyakemi
Maybe I’ll see you sometime in Japan. I’ll be in Tokyo.

necrovore
Good luck in school, send me a copy of your Thesis when you get your PHD.

aqualad, dragonmagnet
Sorry about TC, I had a lot of fun whenever I showed up.

metrophelean, karleeneedsleep, shlomo_yisrael
I’m sorry about the BESM game, I’m sure you can find some other way to amuse yourself.

My flight from Sac International leaves soon, but I’m not sure when I’ll next have internet access, so I just wanted to say, thank you, all of you.

We’ve had our ups and downs, but the last eight years or so have been a wonderful time for me personally, I couldn’t ask for better friends.

-Bob

For the Character Player, the greatest reward comes from experiencing the game from the emotional perspective of an interesting character.

Character Player

95%

Weekend Warrior

70%

Storyteller

55%

Tactician

50%

Casual Gamer

50%

Power Gamer

40%

Specialist

10%

</td>

What RPG Player (Not Character) Type Are You?
created with QuizFarm.com

I remain convinced that I would have been a full orc were such an option available.

I Am A: Chaotic Good Half-OrcRanger Fighter

Alignment:
Chaotic Good characters are independent types with a strong belief in the value of goodness. They have little use for governments and other forces of order, and will generally do their own things, without heed to such groups.

Race:
Half-Orcs are a cross between a human and an orc. Generally, this kind of mating does not occur willingly, so half-orcs are almost never raised by a full set of parents. They tend to be less intelligent and attractive than humans, but are generally stronger and hardier. Violence is a part of their nature, and few half-orcs manage to overcome this to follow other professions. They are generally treated with disdain by other races, if not outright hostility.

Primary Class:
Rangers are the defenders of nature and the elements. They are in tune with the Earth, and work to keep it safe and healthy.

Secondary Class:
Fighters are the warriors. They use weapons to accomplish their goals. This isn't to say that they aren't intelligent, but that they do, in fact, believe that violence is frequently the answer.

Deity:
Shaundakul is the Chaotic Good god of travel and exploration. He is also known as the Rider of the Winds. His followers are typically rangers, and work to protect the land. They typically wear leather armor, and carry long swords and short bows. Shaundakul's symbol is a white hand with the index finger raised.

Find out What D&D Character Are You?, courtesy ofNeppyMan (e-mail)

I was talking with Dan one day and the phrase, "Your the Pieter to my Baron Harkonnen" came to mind in our conversation. What disturbed me was how much the comparison didn't bother me. I wonder if it's a natural reaction toward the playing of villainous characters. I think there are a few positive if not necessarily admirable traits of Harkonnen and I think I like the strange almost conspiratorial relation he has with Pieter and the other characters. Of course it goes without saying that his diversions and appetites remain horrible.

Anyway with that in mind I took this test so it might not be totally representitive.

You scored as Baron Harkonnen.
Work Ethics

Half because I hated the previous post, half because it's been bouncing around in my head, I'm going to rant about Work Ethics.

The thought probably started because of Harvest Moon, the farming game in which, in a large part, the amount of work you're putting into the game determines the payoff. If you work your little avatar hard and plant a shit load of stuff, you'll make tons of tons of money. My little guy's not done with the first year and already has more money than I know what to do with. This combined with a comment a coworker had made about how she did a part of her job too fast and ended up with nothing to do. Yet the real world is really not like that. People in general are paid by the hour or by the year, or some sort of time based reliable pay scale. It doesn't honestly matter how much work you get done, or fail to do, so long as you maintain some low standard. There is quite a clear downside to falling below that minimum standard, being fired, but on the other hand, there is not a clear advantage to working above that standard. Promotions are often not about the amount of work you can do, the effort or quality of that work, but instead by some other factor, such as availability of promotion, being noticed (and liked) by one's superiors, and various forms of nepotism. There are countless examples of this type of advancement, and countless more of hard working, loyal, industrious and intelligent people stuck in menial jobs, never advance.

It seems as if we as a working society have moved almost completely away from the old sense of working, in which the harder you work, the better off you will be, to some new, static system. It's not how much effort you put into your work, but other attributes, how well you get on with your boss, your education level, time working. None of these traits are related to how hard you work except in an abstract relation. (you had to work harder to get a better education, you have to work to get on with your boss, etc) Even in most cases where working hard is considered a virtue for promotion or higher pay, it’s not actually about increasing productivity or quality, but merely appear to increase those traits; to seem hardworking is more of an asset than actually working harder.

The consequences of this change are obvious. Working hard, being productive, these things are no longer workplace virtues. There’s no longer an incentive to value these traits, as they don’t provide the same advantages that they once did.

What is there to be done? What solution should be provided? To be honest, I don't have any real clue. It seems that paying people by commission can lead to problems of their own, and communism has never been satisfactorily implemented. Perhaps we should abandon such archaic assumptions about what proper work ethics should be. This is a distasteful solution to me, but it seems much more likely to eventually occur than any reversing of the current trends or environments.
